Objectives

The objective of our old aged home is to provide residential care services in Nepal, Targeting minor geriatric health and social problems focusing on nursing care for elderly people. Provide recreational facilities for social and mental peace for Elderly people, create home environment responding daily needs that makes comfortable for old aged people in Nepal.

Strategy

In relation to target market, this care home though it is private it is targeted to provide social service for the noble cause in this universe. Strategy is to expand the service in parallel to occupy the elderly people from affordable as well as non affordable groups throughout Nepal.

Our Purpose

Health care delivery system in Nepal has been improving & more population now has access mainly in primary health care. People’s life expectancy has been increased substantially compared to the past due to advancement, availability & information dissemination of medical & health care services. However, specific health services targeted to specific groups is still lacking.Traditionally it’s been the immediate family members who have been the primary care givers especially for their older relatives.

There has been a distinct change in our society in terms of the mass movement of the youth to foreign countries in search of better job opportunities. This has led to households full of older people –without the support of their younger relatives. While major health issues have to be treated in the hospital, there are so many relatively minor health problems that can be addressed by home services.This project has been initiated recognizing the need for such specialized health care.

The start of a private old age home in Lalitpur, Nepal

Not even a single private old age home was present in Nepal at that time. There were only shelter homes for older people. I was very determined to start the old age home but there were no any policy and guidelines to register the office. By the end of 2010, I registered our Old Age Home as Health Home Care Nepal. Initially, we faced a lot of hurdles to get permission to provide health care services to old people from the district health division as such type of service was not mentioned anywhere in the health policy of Nepal. But at the end of 2012, we received permission from the health division which needed to be renewed in intervals. Our Old age Home (Elderly Care Home) started its services in April 2012 in a rented house at Sanepa, Lalitpur. In the beginning, there were no residents for 6 months. We only used to provide elderly counseling and Yoga classes at that time. Our old age home became more functional and got recognition after I published my article named “Geriatric Health and Concerns: Nepal” for the advocacy on the importance of elderly care and old age home in Nepal.

After proving service in the rented house with limited occupancy (15-16 elderly residents) for 5 years, I decided to build my own house in the name of Health Home care Nepal. With the blessings of more than 1000 served elders, I succeeded in building a new home for the old aged people with 30-40 occupancy. We started providing a comprehensive holistic package of services addressing human ailments (social, psychological & medical needs) to the old age community of Nepal, considering their and their family’s comfort.

Our main motto is to provide long-term services to the old age community and get recognition as the best old age home in Nepal. We provide long-term nursing and medical care services. We organize different social and spiritual activities for the social and mental peace of our elder residents. We have a very homely environment at our old age home. We celebrate every festival and occasion together. We try our best to ensure that our residents feel homely here. We also provide physiotherapy and various other health services. We are a team of around 20 people which includes ten full-time staff nurses and two nursing assistants led by a medical doctor. We are planning to build a Health Recreational Club at the roof of the building in the near future. We aim to establish different branches of our old age home throughout Nepal and also provide free services to needy old aged people.
